Rhubarb Treatment for Chronic Renal Insufficiency, June 4, 1986
Terazawa Setsunen and others achieved remarkable efficacy by using pure rhubarb and rhubarb preparations to treat chronic renal failure. After treatment, levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine (Cr), and free amino acids all decreased significantly and approached normal values. The authors speculate that rhubarb may accelerate the urea cycle and reduce blood urea nitrogen. (Terazawa Setsunen et al., “Abstracts of Papers from the Oriental Medical Society,” 1985)
