Kampo Treatment for Bronchial Asthma, June 10, 1986

Eighty-four cases of bronchial asthma were divided into three types: ① atopic type: caused by bronchial spasm; ② infectious type: accompanied by infection; ③ mixed type. All patients in the atopic group took medication for more than four months and showed improvement, with the highest remission rate of 44%; the infectious group had a remission rate of 23%; and the mixed group had a remission rate of 10%.

Among patients who took medication for over one year, 32.5% achieved remission, 67.5% improved, and the overall effective rate reached 100%. Among the formulas used, it was found that Maqingshenglong Tang and Maxingshigan Tang—both containing ephedra—had the highest efficacy for the atopic type, reaching up to 80%, while formulas featuring licorice and poria tended to be more effective for the infectious type.
