Another Case of Hematuria Due to Nephritis, March 10, 1990
For treating hematuria in acute nephritis, I often use Longdan Xiegan Tang, which is consistently effective for mild cases but less satisfactory for severe cases. Recently, I treated a nephritic patient whose urine showed +++ occult blood. I used Liu Jun, Yue Bi, and Wu Ling with jinyinhua, lianqiao, pugongying, and baijiang cao, and after seven doses, the bleeding stopped and the patient recovered. This formula demonstrates that ephedra is highly effective in treating hematuria; according to traditional concepts, hematuria is a symptom of blood heat, and warming herbs are generally prohibited. My use of ephedra to achieve such results is a novel discovery.
