Main Indications of Yin Chen Hao Tang on August 21, 1995
"In Yangming disease, if there is fever and sweating, it means the heat has escaped and yellowing cannot occur; but if only the head sweats while the rest of the body does not, and sweat stops at the neck, with difficulty urinating and thirst for water, it means there is stagnant heat inside, and the body will inevitably turn yellow. Yin Chen Hao Tang is the main remedy for this condition" ("Shang Han Lun," Article 236). The key points here are: "Yangming disease, only the head sweats, sweat stops at the neck, difficulty urinating, thirst for water, stagnant heat inside, body will inevitably turn yellow," and "Use six liang of Yin Chen, fourteen jin of gardenia, and two liang of rhubarb. First boil Yin Chen in twelve dou of water until it reduces to six dou, then add the other two ingredients, boil again until it reduces to three dou, remove the residue, and divide into three doses." In the Han Dynasty, "liang" was roughly equivalent to 3 qian today, or 9g. For easier calculation, we can approximate it as 10g. Therefore, the original dosage should be Yin Chen 60g, gardenia 14 jin, and rhubarb 20g. Ancient people had stronger stomachs than modern people, so based on my experience, the optimal dosage for this formula is Yin Chen 30g, rhubarb 10g, and gardenia 10g. "If you have had Shang Han for seven or eight days, with fever, yellow skin like an orange, difficulty urinating, and slight abdominal distension, Yin Chen Hao Tang is the main remedy" ("Shang Han Lun," Article 260), and "If you have Shang Han, yellow skin, and fever, Gardenia Bark Soup is the main remedy" ("Shang Han Lun," Article 261). Gardenia 10g, Huang Bai 10g, and Licorice 5g; "If you have Shang Han, stagnant heat inside, and the body will inevitably turn yellow, Ma Huang Lian Qiao Red Bean Soup is the main remedy" ("Shang Han Lun," Article 262). Ma Huang 10g, Lian Qiao 10g, Red Beans 10g, Licorice 6g, Almonds 10g, White Root of Paulownia 10g, Ginger 6g, and Four Dates.
