Diarrhea, Abdominal Pain, and Gastric Pain Issues in Liver Cirrhosis—September 18, 1995
The cause of this condition is portal hypertension, varying degrees of dilation of mesenteric vessels, and edema of the gastrointestinal mucosa, leading to extreme decline in the patient's absorption and digestion functions. The subjective symptoms include abdominal distension, loss of appetite, and aversion to food. At this point, dietary precautions are especially important: low-fat, low-protein, and low-fiber liquid or semi-liquid diets are recommended. Vegetable soups and fruit juices can help increase vitamin absorption. Given these reasons, dietary therapy should be the primary treatment for this disease. Even a slight oversight can lead to diarrhea, gastric pain, and nausea. Previously, I specifically formulated No. 6 for this purpose: Ping Wei San combined with Liu Jun Tang, Wu Ling Wu Shui Lan Xi Xiang. This formulation largely addresses the gastrointestinal disturbances associated with this disease. In the formula, Wu Ling San is replaced by Fu Ling, Zhishi, Ze Xie, Che Qian Zi, Gan Jiang, and Fu Pian; the remaining five waters can be used when there is significant ascites, including Da Fu Pi, Hu Lu Pi, Han Fang Ji, Sheng Yi Ren, and Mu Tong. Zelan: resolves blood stasis and promotes urination; Qian Cao: activates blood circulation and stops bleeding; Huo Xiang: dispels dampness and stops vomiting. These are suitable for use in this disease.
The final revised No. 6 liver disease formula: Cang Zhu, Hou Pu, Chen Pi, Gan Cao, Dang Shen, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Ban Xia, Zhishi, Ze Xie, Che Qian Zi, Gan Jiang, Fu Pian, Zelan, Qian Cao, Huo Xiang, and Shen Qu. The characteristic of this formula is that it comprehensively targets the gastrointestinal tract, promotes urination and strengthens the stomach and spleen, with the intention of repairing the gastrointestinal tract, which is essential in the treatment of liver cirrhosis.
