Discussion on Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) Genetic Variation March 13, 1996
HBV is highly variable; no two viral strains have identical nucleic acid sequences. Precisely because of this, each hepatitis B patient experiences a unique onset and prognosis. Understanding this mechanism represents a major breakthrough in comprehending the pathogenesis of hepatitis B. Why does the immune response of HBV hosts vary so dramatically? Currently, the mechanisms underlying HBV variation remain poorly understood. The discovery of HBVeAg—a point mutation in the pre-C region that leads to its disappearance—and the recently identified HBxAg both hold some significance, but their true mechanisms have yet to be elucidated.
