Multiple Myeloma, July 24, 1996
This is caused by highly active plasma cell proliferation in the bone marrow. In addition to the three major clinical manifestations of anemia, bleeding, and infection commonly seen in hematological diseases, there are also four major symptoms: osteolysis, bone pain, renal failure, and cold intolerance. Electrolyte disturbances often occur due to osteolysis, leading to elevated blood calcium levels. Bone marrow examination can confirm the diagnosis. Treatment: Chemotherapy is not very effective, and hyperuricemia may occur during chemotherapy. Multiple myeloma is characterized by increased plasma cells and increased blood viscosity (treatment options include penicillamine and plasma exchange).
