Another Key Point on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, July 26, 1996

Characteristics of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): ① High fever; ② Skin lesions; ③ Joint damage; ④ Kidney damage; ⑤ Vascular damage; ⑥ Serous membrane involvement. Among these lesions, fibrinoid necrosis of blood vessels is a key feature of the disease. Raynaud's phenomenon is observed in the upper limbs, while thrombotic arteriolitis and nodular periarteritis are seen in the lower limbs. Remember Teacher Qi from Dunhuang City, whose erythrocyte sedimentation rate reached 100 mm/h, with pain and swelling in the lower limbs. Doppler ultrasound showed multiple emboli in the lower limb arteries. At the time, the diagnosis was thrombotic phlebitis, but it now appears that it should be corrected to connective tissue disease. This patient later was hospitalized in Shanghai but still could not be accurately diagnosed and eventually died.
