Dopamine’s Cardiotonic and Diuretic Effects, October 16, 1996
In addition to its anti-shock effects, dopamine can also produce a marked diuretic effect on edema caused by heart failure, rheumatic heart disease, pulmonary heart disease, kidney disease, and other conditions. Typically, adults are given 40 mg of dopamine mixed with 200 mL of 5%–10% glucose solution, administered via slow then rapid intravenous drip. Furthermore, 20 mg of dopamine combined with 20 mg of furosemide injected into the abdominal cavity yields a very obvious diuretic effect.
