Afu Tang treats erythema multiforme (as reported in “Medical Information Exchange Day” in November 1976); adding galangal makes it even more effective. Guizhi Shaoyao Zhimu Tang treats rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis. Xiaofeng Chushi Dan treats stiffness and difficulty in flexing and extending the limbs. Afu Lizhong Tang treats abdominal distension and loose stools. Si Ni Tang treats diarrhea with clear watery stools, cold extremities, and a barely perceptible pulse. In summary, Afu is a traditional Chinese medicine derived from Aconitum, possessing a clear immunomodulatory effect. This immunomodulatory effect is achieved through the “yang-tonifying” action of TCM, which essentially involves: ① regulating the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal cortex axis; therefore, Afu preparations may have an immunosuppressive effect. ② enhancing the excitability of the sympathetic nervous system; Afu preparations may exhibit adrenalin-like effects and inhibit cholinesterase. Some people find that using Aconitum relieves lower back pain, others find that Afu alleviates asthma, and still others report that Afu increases heart rate—all demonstrating this effect.
