Rare Complications of Cirrhosis, October 20, 1996
Typically, patients with cirrhosis often develop ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, and liver cancer. Recently, a case was reported of a cirrhotic patient with ascites who, after repeated episodes of hepatic encephalopathy, subsequently developed paraplegia below the waist. According to foreign literature, in 1960 ZeⅣe first reported a case of a cirrhotic patient with ascites who developed this condition after undergoing portal shunt surgery, naming it “shunt-related cerebrospinal disease.” Since then, numerous cases have been reported worldwide, totaling 36 by the end of 1974.
