Symptoms include cirrhotic ascites, neurological symptoms (confusion), scleral icterus, blue or brown rings visible at the corneal margin, generalized muscle hypertonia, brisk tendon reflexes, tremors in hands and feet, familial occurrence, and young age. Western medicine uses penicillamine and dimercaprol; traditional Chinese medicine focuses on clearing heat and detoxifying, supplemented by diuresis and bowel regulation. Ingredients include rhubarb, coptis, scutellaria, banzhilian, rehmannia, bixia, and peony. Decoctions can provide some therapeutic effect.
