Case of Insomnia in Mr. Yang, September 23, 1998

In the autumn of Wuyin year, Mr. Yang sought treatment for long-term insomnia. Previously, he often took diazepam, which allowed him to sleep soundly for two to three hours. He underwent a comprehensive examination, and apart from slightly slow and reduced cerebral blood flow, no other diseases were found. His pulse was strong and robust, with symptoms including bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, restlessness and insomnia, discomfort in both flanks, and a red tongue with thin coating. He had a history of trauma, injuring six ribs, but there was no displacement, and recovery was good.

Prescription: Danggui, Chuanxiong, Chishao, Shengdihuang, Taoren, Honghua, Chaihu, Zhishi, Jiegeng, Gancao, Niuxi, Zhimu, Fushen, Yuanzhi, fried Zao Ren, Boziren, Huangqin, Shenglonggu, Muli, Xiangru, Shengyi Ren, Zhusha, Shengshigao, Huanglian.

After taking seven doses of the above prescription, all symptoms significantly alleviated, sleep increased to 5–6 hours per night, appetite improved, spirits lifted, and flank pain occurred only twice. The previous prescription was Xuefu Zhuyu Tang, supplemented with Tongmailing, Zao Ren Tang, Banqiang Heji, Dingxin Tang, and Chaihu plus Longgu Muli Tang.

Prescription: Chishao, Chuanxiong, Honghua, Jiangxiang, Danshen, Zhilu Xiang, Meiyao, Muzhe, Shengdihuang and Shudi, Yujin, Zhimu, Fushen, Yuanzhi, fried Zao Ren, Boziren, Banxia, Qiang Duohuo, Xiangru, Shengyi Ren, Weilingxian, Dangshen, Huangqin, Shenglonggu, Muli, Rougui, Huanglian, and Dazao.

This formula requires ten doses. The purpose of Tongmailing is to treat cerebral and coronary artery sclerosis, since arteriosclerosis can cause insomnia, headaches, and chest discomfort, so it's essential to clear the blockages. This formula promotes blood circulation and removes blood stasis to address the root cause.

Note: The root of insomnia lies in the heart and brain. Poor blood circulation in the heart and slow blood flow in the brain can both lead to insomnia. Chaihu plus Longgu Muli Tang aims to relieve symptoms and calm the mind. Dingxin Tang, Zao Ren Tang, and Banqiang Heji form three layers of defense, attacking wave after wave, with the goal of calming the spirit and ensuring victory. The drawback of this formula is its complex composition; long-term use may harm the stomach! However, in practice, the earlier doses did not affect the stomach, indicating that the patient’s spleen and stomach are still healthy and can tolerate it. It has been a week since the prescription was given, and no feedback has been received yet, but we expect good news soon! Upon calling the patient, we learned that the medication is effective, the condition is stable, and after three doses, he came for a follow-up visit!
