Naming of Cancer—May 18, 2000

  1. Malignant tumors originating from ectodermal epithelial cells are called cancer, such as adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, papillary cell carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma, etc. In general, any organ that communicates with the external environment—such as the stomach, lungs, colon, nasopharynx, mouth, throat, breast, bladder, and urethra—is prone to developing cancer.

  2. Tumors originating from mesodermal interstitial tissues are called sarcoma, such as smooth muscle, striated muscle, lymphatic vessels and lymph, blood and blood vessels, bone marrow, fat, fiber, and serous membrane tissues.

  3. Malignant tumors originating from neural, endocrine, and gonadal tissues of the endoderm have somewhat chaotic naming conventions and lack a unified standard, but those arising from immature tissues are referred to as ×× cell tumors.
