  1. Treatment of gastric pain in liver disease

This is an important measure for advanced liver cirrhosis. Congestion of the gastric mucosa, stress ulcers, varices of the gastric fundus, and bile stasis are all common factors causing stomach pain and vomiting. Although this phenomenon has long been documented in traditional Chinese medicine theory as “liver wood overcoming earth,” most doctors have not truly understood the essence of treatment. At this stage, treatment should follow the principle of “treat the symptom first,” with specific prescriptions focusing on treating the spleen to address the liver, prioritizing Xiang Sha Liu Jun Tang combined with Xuan Fu Dai Zhe Tang; for ulcers, use Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang; for diarrhea, use Wei Ling Tang. I have found this approach effective every time, and I say: “Treating the spleen is treating the liver; treat the liver slowly, treat the stomach urgently—this is the ultimate way to treat the liver.”

  1. Treatment of jaundice in liver disease patients and residual yellowing of the conjunctiva after jaundice

This is a difficult symptom to treat in liver disease patients, indicating bile stasis. What causes bile stasis? It could be due to compression of the bile capillaries, necrosis of liver cells, infection of liver tissue and biliary system, and many other factors. The gallbladder-liver combination formula is effective in treating liver disease and jaundice, and adding Yin Chen and Zhi Zi makes the effect even more satisfactory. This formula integrates bile drainage, anti-inflammatory action, and blood production into one, showing particular effectiveness in rescuing critically ill livers and treating acute jaundice; yet many people lack experience in this area, so it should not be taken lightly. After the jaundice index drops, the yellowing of the conjunctiva and the darkening of the skin can persist for a long time, so using the kidney-tonifying and blood-circulating method can be very effective. I usually find that Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang works well; Liu Wei Di Huang Tang is also effective, and Bai Ci Li, Nu Zhen Zi, Mo Han Lian, Rou Cong Rong, Pu Gong Ying, Tu Si Zi, Shan Ci Gu, and other herbs can also be added.
