Question: My spouse has been coughing, producing sputum, and the sputum is thin and white, especially in autumn and winter. The cough can last for over a month. Western medical examinations show everything to be normal, and both traditional Chinese and Western medicines have been tried, but with little effect. What could be the cause, and can traditional Chinese medicine cure it?

Answer: Such patients often have concurrent chronic pharyngitis or chronic rhinitis, which frequently occur in autumn and winter. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that autumn is dry, and dryness affects the lung meridian, while winter is cold, and coldness contracts. Western medicine, on the other hand, thinks that autumn and winter are the seasons most prone to upper respiratory infections. Chronic pharyngitis and rhinitis serve as the primary source of pathogens, which easily spread downward. Modern medicine calls this postnasal drip syndrome, upper airway cough syndrome, or cough variant asthma. Treatment is best done with traditional Chinese medicine, and it is even better if syndrome differentiation and treatment are applied. If symptoms are mild, it is recommended to try either Yangyin Qingfei Wan or Baihe Gujin Wan.
