Question: Nine months ago, she was hospitalized for pleural effusion, and examination revealed advanced lung adenocarcinoma. After chemotherapy controlled the condition, she switched to targeted therapy for half a month, but then developed ascites. Ultrasound shows multiple lymph node metastases—metastases in the peritoneum, pleura, mesentery, and pelvic lymph nodes. Now she has pain in the chest, back, and abdomen. Can heat compresses alleviate the pain? Can traditional Chinese medicine be taken during chemotherapy?
Answer: Heat compresses are ineffective. Such patients must receive third-level pain management to minimize suffering. Traditional Chinese medicine can relieve pain for most patients, but it must be administered based on syndrome differentiation.
