7. Reflections on Life as a Single Person
Female, 24 years old. Recently, whenever she eats meat with skin, she develops a cough at night, accompanied by white foamy sputum and stomach pain. In severe cases, she vomits large amounts of phlegm. After vomiting for a while, her stomach feels better. Could you please help me understand what's causing this?
Answer: This is an allergic reaction. The most sensitive part of the autonomic nervous system is the gastrointestinal tract, and another sensitive area is the throat—this is what the saying "seeing the throat is three parts sensitive" refers to. Allergic reactions in the gastrointestinal tract can cause nausea, vomiting, intestinal rumbling, and diarrhea. In traditional Chinese medicine, this is called "stomach qi rising against its flow," meaning that the spleen qi does not ascend and the stomach qi does not descend.
