10. Hypothyroidism and Breast Hyperplasia

Question: I am 35 years old, with lumps on both sides of my neck that move when touched. I’ve had an ultrasound and blood tests, and the diagnosis is hypothyroidism. Is it necessary to do a CT scan? I also have breast hyperplasia. Is there a connection between hypothyroidism and breast hyperplasia?

Answer: Hypothyroidism is mostly caused by subacute thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune disease that recurs frequently. The probability of developing hyperthyroidism is 7/10, while the probability of developing hypothyroidism is 3/10. Western medicine treats this condition with hormones, but it only addresses the symptoms. Some patients develop chronic thyroiditis, at which point the chance of developing hypothyroidism rises to 7/10, while the chance of developing hyperthyroidism drops to 3/10. Patients with hypothyroidism who test positive for antithyroid globulin antibodies and peroxidase antibodies can be diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease. These conditions can all lead to infections and enlarged cervical lymph nodes, but they are unrelated to breast diseases, so there’s no need for a CT scan.
