Q: My mother has familial hypertension. Recently, a hospital examination revealed a mild stroke, and now her right leg is somewhat stiff, and her mouth is also a bit difficult to control. After a two-week course of intravenous fluids, she’s now continuing to take Western medicine. Her mouth has improved, but she still feels very tired in her right leg, her walking posture looks a bit awkward, and her nerves seem less sensitive. She also feels generally weak. What’s going on?

A: The reduced mobility on the right side indicates that the stroke occurred in the left basal ganglia, which is close to the language center, hence the speech difficulties. This condition requires slow, gradual treatment—not something that can be fixed in a few days. It’s best to use TCM for differential diagnosis and treatment, employing methods like activating blood circulation, removing blood stasis, calming the liver, and extinguishing wind. With a treatment course lasting more than six months, most patients can achieve varying degrees of recovery.
