July 8, 2014: Summary of Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment for Gastric Diseases
Chronic atrophic gastritis combined with erosion or ulcer is currently the most effectively treated condition with TCM. Commonly used formulas are as follows:
-
Xiangsha Liujunzi Decoction combined with Banxia Xiexin Decoction. The main symptoms for this formula are epigastric discomfort, distension pain, mild pain, and a swollen tongue.
-
Ye’s Yangwei Decoction combined with Banxia Xiexin Decoction. In addition to the aforementioned symptoms, a red tongue with little coating is an important indication for using this formula.
-
Huanglian Jiedu Decoction. A red tongue with thick, greasy yellow coating is the standard for using this formula; it can be used in combination with the previous two formulas when necessary.
-
204 Stomach Medicine (Xiangfu, Yanhusuo, Alum, Calcined Walei): The standard for using this formula is acid reflux; if there is no acid reflux, this formula is not needed.
-
Di Huang Liang Tang. The main symptom for this formula is fixed, unchanging pain located in the center of the epigastrium.
-
Sanzhu Heji. The main symptom for this formula is stomach pain accompanied by distension, located in the center of the epigastrium.

July 11, 2014: Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria
In the early summer of the Jiawu year, a patient, a 49-year-old woman, was seen in the outpatient clinic of the Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She had anemia, jaundice, elevated indirect bilirubin, mild hepatosplenomegaly, and tea-colored urine. The general hospital initially misdiagnosed her as having megaloblastic anemia, but after taking the prescribed medication, her condition improved.
Prescription: Rehmannia 12 g, Cornus 30 g, Ginseng 15 g, Pseudoginseng 15 g, Codonopsis 15 g, Glehnia 15 g, Moutan Bark 6 g, Poria 12 g, Alisma 10 g, Mugwort 15 g, Sophora 15 g, Motherwort 15 g, Saltpeter 10 g, Lycopus 10 g, Alum 6 g, Gardenia 10 g, Rheum 10 g, Polyporus 10 g, Atractylodes 10 g, Cinnamon 10 g. Note: Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria is a benign clonal disorder caused by acquired genetic mutations in hematopoietic stem cells. Clinically, it manifests as intravascular hemolysis, anemia, thrombosis, and jaundice. Western medical treatment for this condition mainly uses dextran and hydrocortisone.
July 18, 2014: Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment of Primary Thrombocythemia
This disease is an idiopathic myeloproliferative disorder. Its characteristics include abnormal proliferation of megakaryocytes in the bone marrow, elevated platelet counts, and corresponding increases in both the red and white blood cell lines. Clinical manifestations include bleeding, thrombosis, and splenomegaly. In addition to nosebleeds, bleeding may also occur in the gums and mucous membranes of the skin, especially in the gastrointestinal mucosa, which can lead to hematochezia, hematuria, and hematemesis. Thrombosis can occur in the heart, brain, lungs, kidneys, and mesentery. Western medical treatment typically involves drugs such as hydroxyurea and interferon, which only provide symptomatic relief and have no curative effect.
Case 1
In June 2014, Ms. Li, a 50-year-old woman, suffered from primary thrombocythemia, with platelet counts reaching as high as 1200×10^9/L. After treatment with the following prescription, she showed improvement.
Prescription: Curcuma 10 g, Chicken Gizzard Membrane 10 g, Paris polyphylla 10 g, Salvia miltiorrhiza 30 g, Astragalus 20 g, Polygonum multiflorum 20 g, Dioscorea 10 g, Sanleng 10 g, Ezhushi 10 g, Isatis indigotica 10 g, Gentiana macrophylla 10 g, Shenqu 10 g, Alisma 10 g, Rehmannia 12 g, Cornus 30 g, Ginseng 15 g, Pseudoginseng 15 g, Glehnia 15 g, Codonopsis 15 g, Cicada Slough 6 g, Mulberry 10 g, Coix Seed 20 g, Peach Kernel 10 g, Polygonatum 20 g, Hedyotis diffusa 20 g, Taxus chinensis 10 g, Camptotheca acuminata 10 g. Two doses every three days, decocted in water.
The above prescription was taken concurrently with Blood-Nourishing Granules, Xiaofeng II, and Qingkou II for a total of 20 doses, resulting in a reduction of platelet count to 254×10^9/L.
Case 2
In April 2014, Dr. Zhang’s son, age 3, repeatedly suffered from colds, and after recovery, his platelet count remained persistently high, peaking at 600×10^9/L. He was diagnosed with reactive thrombocythemia. Dr. Zhang was extremely anxious and restless, seeking treatment from me. I reassured him that there was no need to worry, as this was reactive thrombocythemia, different from secondary thrombocythemia, and the prognosis was very good.
Prescription: Coix Seed 100 g, Hawthorn 100 g, Lithospermum 100 g, Black Snake 50 g, Centipede 5 pieces, Sanleng 50 g, Ezhushi 50 g, Verbena 50 g, Green Wind Vine 50 g, Hedyotis diffusa 100 g, Half Branch Lotus 100 g, Chicken Gizzard Membrane 100 g, Ginseng 50 g, Pseudoginseng 50 g, Codonopsis 50 g, Glehnia 50 g, Cornus 100 g, Shan Zhu Yu 100 g. All ingredients were finely ground, sieved, and administered at 5 g each time, twice daily, mixed with warm water.
After half a month of taking the above prescription, due to the child’s crying and restlessness, the prescription was adjusted.

July 18, 2014: Case Study on the Treatment of Accelerated Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia
Mr. Zhao, 58 years old, has been suffering from chronic myelogenous leukemia for 10 years, with excellent results under my treatment. I used a modified version of the Lanzhou Formula along with the proprietary medicine Dahuang Qichong Wan.
Dahuang Qichong Wan formula: leech, horsefly, grub, earthworm, rhubarb, Rehmannia, Chuanxiong, peach kernel, apricot kernel, bee hive, dung beetle, pill bug, corydalis, shepherd’s purse, bupleurum, scutellaria, pinellia, cinnamon, white peony, mirabilite, citrus aurantium, thickleaf, magnolia bark, artemisia, and others. All ingredients were ground into powder and made into water pills, 8 g per dose, twice daily.
Over the past 10 years, the patient’s condition has remained stable, with complete blood counts within the normal range and no splenomegaly. In April 2014, the patient experienced a relapse due to a cold. Ultrasound examination revealed that the spleen had enlarged to 96 mm below the umbilicus, partially extending into the pelvis. Laboratory tests showed: white blood cells 600×10^9/L, hemoglobin 60 g/L, basophils 27%, platelets 32×10^9/L. Bone marrow examination indicated: 7% promyelocytes, 3% early myelocytes. Diagnosis: accelerated phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia. I promptly administered hydroxyurea at 20 mg/kg, three times daily; Qingkou II two pills, three times daily; and Blood-Nourishing Granules one bag, twice daily.
Prescription: Curcuma 10 g, Chicken Gizzard Membrane 10 g, Paris polyphylla 10 g, Salvia miltiorrhiza 20 g, Astragalus 20 g, Polygonum multiflorum 20 g, Dioscorea 10 g, Sanleng 10 g, Ezhushi 10 g, Isatis indigotica 10 g, Gentiana macrophylla 10 g, Shenqu 10 g, Alisma 10 g, Ginseng 15 g, Pseudoginseng 15 g, Codonopsis 15 g, Glehnia 15 g, Cicada Slough 6 g, Mulberry 10 g, Coix Seed 30 g, Peach Kernel 10 g, Polygonatum 20 g, Hedyotis diffusa 15 g, Taxus chinensis 10 g, Camptotheca acuminata 15 g. One dose per day, decocted in water.
After taking the above prescription for 20 doses, the patient showed comprehensive improvement: the spleen had shrunk to normal size, complete blood counts returned to normal, basophils were at 7%, and bone marrow examination revealed a typical picture of chronic myelogenous leukemia.
