1. Liu Wei Di Huang Tang-Type Formulas
Liu Wei Di Huang Tang, also known as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, originates from "Direct Explanation of Pediatric Medicines." This formula can be taken as a decoction or made into pills, hence the dual names of soup and pill. Composed of Shengdi (or Shudi), Shanyu, Shanyao, Danpi, Fuling, and Zexie, it is the quintessential formula for nourishing kidney yin. Symptoms treated include dizziness, blurred vision, tinnitus, lower back pain, leg fatigue, bone-steaming heat, five-heart restlessness, and night sweats. Modern medicine believes that most indications for this formula are related to the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal cortex axis function. At the same time, this formula can enhance the body's immune function, clinically applicable to leukemia, esophageal cancer, hypertension, diabetes, glaucoma, chronic nephritis, chronic hepatitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, emphysema, pulmonary heart disease, and women's menstrual irregularities, among others. Adding Zhimu and Huangbo to Liu Wei Di Huang Tang results in Zhibo Di Huang Tang (as recorded in "Medical Treasure Mirror"), primarily used for yin deficiency with excessive fire and internal heat; adding Goji berries and chrysanthemums results in Qi Ju Di Huang Tang (as recorded in "Medical Level"), primarily used for liver-kidney yin deficiency and blurred vision; adding Wuweizi results in Du Qi Wan (as recorded in "Medical Treasure Mirror"), primarily used for kidney not accepting qi and difficulty breathing; adding Mai Dong and Wuweizi results in Ba Xian Chang Shou Wan (as recorded in "Medical Level"), primarily used for lung-kidney yin deficiency and frequent coughing; removing Danpi and adding Goji berries and roasted licorice results in Zuo Gui Yin (as recorded in "Jing Yue Complete Works"), primarily used for insufficient kidney water and yin liquid loss, lower back pain, nocturnal emission, dry mouth and night sweats, and intense thirst.
