1. Sang Ju Yin Qiao-Type Formulas

Sang Ju Yin and Yin Qiao San both originate from "Differentiation of Warm Diseases," pioneering pungent-cool exterior-releasing and filling the gap left by the pungent-warm exterior-releasing approach in "Shanghan Lun," with outstanding clinical efficacy and widely praised by physicians. Sang Ju Yin is composed of eight herbs: mulberry leaves, chrysanthemums, Lianqiao, apricot kernels, Jiegeng, reed roots, peppermint, and licorice, primarily indicated for wind-heat exterior syndrome, headache, fever with chills (more heat than cold), thirst, sore throat, and cough. Modern medicine believes this formula is suitable for acute pharyngitis caused by Gram-positive cocci and various non-viral upper respiratory infections, including lobar pneumonia, bronchial pneumonia, and acute/chronic bronchitis, especially effective for high fevers in children's upper respiratory infections. Yin Qiao San is composed of nine herbs: Schizonepeta spikes, Jiegeng, Er Hua, Lianqiao, peppermint, bamboo leaves, fermented soybeans, burdock seeds, licorice, and reed roots, primarily indicated for wind-heat exterior syndrome combined with throat pain, presenting with headache, fever with chills (more heat than cold), thirst, and sore throat. This formula's indications are slightly heavier than Sang Ju, with stronger heat-clearing and detoxifying power. From a Western medical perspective, besides treating acute tonsillitis, it is also highly effective against all purulent bacterial infections throughout the body. Wuwei Disinfection Drink (as recorded in "Medical Treasure Mirror") is composed of five herbs: honeysuckle, wild chrysanthemum, dandelion, purple-flowered groundsel, and purple-backed sunflower, primarily used for treating toxic sores and various purulent infections. Although this formula contains only five herbs, its efficacy is remarkable. Xianfang Huo Ming Drink (as recorded in "Surgical Practice") is composed of pangolin, flower powder, licorice, frankincense, white angelica, red peony, bellflower, windproof herb, myrrh, soapberry spines, tail root, citrus peel, and honeysuckle, primarily used for treating carbuncles and boils, whether pus has formed or not. Qingwen Bai Du Drink (as recorded in "One Gain from Epidemic Rash") is composed of Huanglian, Huangqin, Zhi Zi, Peony bark, Yuanshen, Lianqiao, licorice, Shengdi, rhino horn, red medicine, Zhimu, Jiegeng, raw gypsum, and bamboo leaves, primarily used for evil heat penetrating internally and both qi and blood being scorched, clinically presenting with high fever, intense thirst, profuse sweating, confusion, agitation, delirium, blood spots from yang toxicity, hematemesis, epistaxis, and bloody stools. From a modern medical perspective, this formula is suitable for sepsis caused by various infections, what TCM calls "evil heat penetrating internally," which mostly corresponds to Western sepsis. Puji Disinfection Drink (Li Dongyuan) is composed of Huanglian, Huangqin, Banlangen, Yuanshen, burdock seeds, mabo, Lianqiao, citrus peel, licorice, silkworm pupae, Chaihu, peppermint, Jiegeng, and Shengma, primarily used for heat toxicity attacking the upper body, causing mumps, large-head epidemic, facial erysipelas, and throat swelling, among other symptoms.
