Looking back on our journey, what I find especially precious is the richness and breadth of human inner worlds. Although time may leave no trace, sealing away the myriad events of life, causing many things in our memories to gradually fade or become blurred, there exists a scene called friendship that remains evergreen in the passage of human history—timeless, deeply resonant, and truly invaluable. Among the many friends I've met, Mr. Pei Zhengxue's simple, serene, sincere, and warm-hearted character, his brotherly kindness that commands respect, has taught me the true value of such rare and precious relationships. His calm and unassuming attitude toward life, his meticulous academic approach, and his down-to-earth demeanor have truly made me proud.
Since we first met, I have always referred to Mr. Pei as "Teacher Pei." The Pei family is a renowned medical dynasty, with a strong family tradition. His father, Pei Shen, was a prominent figure in Longshan, dedicating his entire life to medicine, excelling in calligraphy, painting, and poetry. He founded "Shen Gong Middle School," and his efforts to benefit society and nurture talent in Wushan, Longshan, became legendary. Now approaching his late seventies, Professor Pei Zhengxue is an expert in integrated Chinese and Western medicine in Gansu Province. Throughout his career, he gained fame for his exceptional medical skills, noble medical ethics, broad knowledge, diligent thinking, and outstanding character, earning him widespread recognition both in Longshan and within the Chinese medical community. His co-authored masterpiece—the first comprehensive work on integrated Chinese and Western medicine in internal medicine—was awarded the "International Gold Award for Outstanding Contribution" at the Third World Conference on Traditional Medicine held in the United States in April 1996. He himself received the honor of being named one of the "World's Top 100 Stars of Ethnic Medicine," and in 1997, he was included among the "300 Famous Senior Chinese Physicians Nationwide." His specialized formula for treating leukemia was later dubbed the "Lanzhou Formula" by the medical community. Professor Pei's "Sixteen-Character Principle"—"Western diagnosis, Chinese dialectical treatment, traditional Chinese medicine as the mainstay, Western medicine as a supplement"—has also been widely recognized and embraced by Chinese and Western medical professionals across the country. His medical theories and therapeutic approaches have become a significant school of thought in contemporary Chinese medicine. Professor Pei has authored numerous works, and his students can be found all over Longshan. What’s truly remarkable is that even after achieving great success in his career, he continued to study tirelessly, never stopping his pursuit of knowledge, constantly striving to reach new heights in the realm of medicine. In April 2001, I received a book he had edited, featuring integrated Chinese and Western medical therapies for liver disease, hypertension, stomach ailments, diabetes, and other conditions. In August 2003, I received another deluxe edition: "Collected Medical Experiences of Pei Zhengxue" and "Medical Talks and Medical Essays of Pei Zhengxue." In September 2004, Professor Pei led his disciples in organizing a clinical experience workshop—a valuable initiative that showcased the profound value of traditional Chinese medicine in the modern medical landscape... These are precisely the spirit and character of Professor Pei. Though I don't fully understand the profound teachings of a physician dedicated to saving lives, I can truly feel the spirit and sentiment behind them.
My relationship with Professor Pei began in the early 1990s. It was during that time that I visited him in hopes of receiving his expertise, and we soon developed a deep friendship, becoming close confidants for more than a decade. When the 10th anniversary of Mr. Pei Shen's passing arrived in 1999, I was unable to attend the commemorative ceremony due to my travels abroad, so I sent him a letter of congratulations. Later, due to changes in my professional duties, we began exchanging letters frequently. Especially during the period when my father was ill and undergoing treatment, and even in his final days, Professor Pei traveled between Gansu and Inner Mongolia several times, offering immense help, support, and comfort to my family—and even now, whenever I think of those moments, I am filled with warmth and gratitude.
Because our backgrounds and life experiences were similar, and because Professor Pei's simple and unpretentious nature allowed us to connect deeply on a personal level, we often shared heartfelt conversations with each other. His humble character, his refined and elegant tastes, and his family values and friendships all played a role in our bond. I often looked to him as a model of perseverance and selflessness, a source of inspiration for me. I deeply appreciated Professor Pei's unwavering dedication to learning and his ability to embrace life with grace and elegance. Whenever I returned home, no matter how busy I was, I would always set aside half a day to visit him; each time, we would share stories of the past in a peaceful and joyful atmosphere, reminiscing about old times and talking freely, our friendship flowing warmly and brightly. Professor Pei was also quite skilled in poetry and calligraphy, and his brushstrokes often carried deep insights. His poems and essays were published in newspapers and magazines—something that was not easy for Professor Pei, who devoted most of his energy to his medical practice, yet it was all the more admirable. I remember that among the six free-form poems Professor Pei published in the magazine "Zhengyou," one poem titled "Old Fend": "In Longshan, I treat the people with medicine, innovating with three fingers—difficult to surpass. My heart is filled with self-knowledge, knowing that the sunset is short, yet I borrow my white hair to remain young." Another poem, "Old Realm by the Pool," read: "With pen in hand, ink flows like silk, bold spirit fills the household. The green mountains outside do not laugh at me—time does not return in just a few cycles." These verses not only expressed his feelings but also reflected his appreciation for life and his relentless pursuit of self-improvement; they were a true reflection of Professor Pei's personality and his mindset of cherishing every moment and moving forward with purpose. Shortly after taking up his position in Inner Mongolia, Professor Pei wrote a self-inscribed calligraphy piece and sent it to me, which read: "Longshan once left a good reputation for governance, its literary and moral legacy enduring. As autumn winds pass through the border city, I look toward the northern mountains, thinking of you." I deliberately hung this piece in my study as a source of encouragement.
Many years ago, I suggested that Professor Pei compile and publish his collection of poems and essays for readers. Now, his friend's "Great Wind Melody" is about to be released, and I feel deeply gratified. In fact, before Professor Pei compiled these works into a book, I had already read almost all of his pieces, often reading them multiple times. Thanks to Professor Pei's friendship, and thanks to those words, I found myself drawn to them again and again. Each time I read Professor Pei's poems and essays, they evoked memories of the past—like the novel "Great Wind Melody," which depicted that special era with vivid, artistic detail, portraying ordinary people and everyday events amid historical change. Though those days are now distant, the marks of those long years still linger clearly in my mind. The novels "The Wei River Flows Slowly," along with the essays "On the Other Side of the Han River" and "Homesickness," tell stories of vast changes in the world, weaving a rich sense of hometown affection into their simple, peaceful prose. Through these narratives, readers can reflect on life's wisdom and gain insight into the ways of the world, while also feeling nostalgic for their youth and looking forward to the future. Professor Pei was a man of great learning and deep thought, constantly accumulating knowledge. His reflections on morning exercises by the river, his thoughts on Western Europe, his observations from visits to the United States, and his reflections on the memorial service for Mr. Guo Weiping—all these writings were full of meaning, inspiring and uplifting. I believe that after reading Professor Pei's works, readers will find new spiritual enlightenment and purification.
I am delighted that his collection of writings is about to be published, and I am honored to write a preface to share my thoughts and feelings with others. I also wrote a small note as a reminder to ourselves: "The ancient road of Yangguan leads us to the present, while the lands beyond Longshan bear the weight of great achievements. As we travel through the desolate sands of Longshan, we are reminded of your kindness and the peace that fills our hearts."
