(1) Prognosis of Gastric Cancer

The prognosis of gastric cancer is a rather complex topic. Generally speaking, the prognosis depends closely on how early the cancer is detected, the malignancy of the tumor, the depth of invasion into the stomach wall, the pattern of tumor growth, and the extent of lymph node metastasis. The prognosis for cancers located in the body of the stomach is better than those in the fundus, cardia, or antrum; the smaller the tumor, the better the prognosis; if the cancer infiltrates within the stomach wall, the prognosis is better than when it breaks through the serosa and spreads to the abdominal cavity and adjacent organs; the more numerous and farther the lymph node metastases, the significantly lower the 5-year survival rate; in terms of pathological types, papillary adenocarcinoma and tubular adenocarcinoma have better prognoses, while undifferentiated carcinoma and mucinous cell carcinoma have poorer prognoses. Young gastric cancer patients often have worse prognoses than older ones because their conditions are easily overlooked leading to delayed diagnosis and higher malignancy.
