The patient reported that throat pain had eased, fever had subsided, but still felt dizzy, with a slightly red tip of the tongue, a thin coating on the tongue, and only a small patch of pseudomembrane remaining. 3 Treatment of infantile whooping cough (spasmodic phase) with a traditional Chinese medicine formula: 62 cases were treated, with satisfactory results. The composition of the Spasm-Relieving and Cough-Relieving Decoction is as follows: Feng Wu, Zhang Wubing, Yun Yu, and other herbs are used in combination to achieve the desired effects.

Cucumis sativus, Dendrocalamus asper, and other medicinal ingredients are utilized in this formula.

The decoction is prepared by combining 4g of Silkworm Cocoon, 4g of Silkworm Chrysalis, 6g of Earthworm, 6g of Dragon's Blood, 15g of Centella Asiatica, 10g of Asterisk Flower, and 6g of Licorice Root. The formula is taken once daily, with additional doses as needed.

For treatment outcomes:

  • In 122 cases, coughs were completely stopped after taking the medication for 3 doses.
  • In 2002.5, another 122 cases showed improvement after taking the medication for 4–7 doses.

Gu Yuyan et al. reported that their treatment regimen for infantile whooping cough syndrome achieved good therapeutic results. The compound cough-relief formula was effective for children aged 1–6 years.

In addition, the formula was administered as follows: 6g of Fritillaria cirrhosa, 3g of Perilla frutescens, 3g of Amomum villosum, 3g of Strychnos nux-vomica, 3g of Lonicera japonica, 3g of Paeonia lactiflora, and 3g of Glycyrrhiza uralensis. The dosage was adjusted based on age and weight, with each dose being taken twice daily. The treatment group saw significant improvements in 67 cases (38.07%) after 1–2 doses, while 20 cases (22.47%) showed marked improvement after 3–4 doses.

The control group had 26 cases that recovered (29.21%), with 40 cases showing marked improvement (44.94%), 20 cases experiencing progress (22.47%), and 3 cases remaining unchanged (3.37%). The comparison between the two groups revealed a p-value less than 0.001, indicating a statistically significant difference in recovery rates. The efficacy of the treatment group was also significantly higher compared to the control group, with a p-value less than 0.01.

(From “Guangming Chinese Medicine,” October 2006)

In addition, the treatment group included 40 cases of whooping cough, where acupuncturists used the method of cooling blood and resolving stasis to treat the condition. A formula composed of equal parts of Fritillaria cirrhosa, Chicken Gizzard, and other herbs was used, ground into fine powder and packaged in individual doses of 3g each. Each dose was taken three times daily, mixed with white sugar water. Acupuncture was performed at Shao Shang acupoint, located one knuckle above the thumb and the second finger joint. The needle was inserted slightly upward, aiming for a depth of half a finger’s width, and the needle was withdrawn after bleeding occurred. The Four-Fold Acupoint was also targeted—on the palmar surface of the index, middle, ring, and little fingers, just below the first and second finger joints. The needle was inserted to draw out a yellowish-white, transparent fluid. Both hands were treated, with acupuncture sessions occurring every other day. The treatment results showed that among the 40 children treated, 29 cases were cured, accounting for 72.5%; 9 cases showed marked improvement, representing 22.5%; 2 cases remained unchanged, accounting for 0.5%; the overall cure rate was 95.0%.

(From “Shanghai Acupuncture Journal,” May 2007)

Chen Jichun employed the method of cooling blood and resolving stasis, developing a formula called Dan Qi Shuang Zi Ma Shi Tang for treating whooping cough in 10 cases. The formula consisted of 3g of Cortex Phellodendri, 1g of Panax Notoginseng, 3g of Rubia Cordifolia, 3g of Eupatorium fortunei, 3g of Ephedra sinica, 3g of Apricot Kernel, 3g of Earthworm, 4g of Silkworm Cocoon, 5g of Gypsum, and 1g of Licorice Root. The formula was prepared by boiling the herbs in water, taken once daily, divided into two warm doses. Adjustments were made according to symptoms; for frequent spasms, Silkworm Cocoon and Whole Scorpion were added; for frequent vomiting, Alum and Pinellia Ternata were incorporated; for severe coughing with blood or nosebleeds, Rehmannia Root and Sedum Sarmentosum were used; for facial edema, Plantago Seed, Talc, and Coix Seed were added. The treatment results showed that among the 10 cases treated, 7 were cured, accounting for 70%; 3 cases showed marked improvement, representing 30%; 0 cases remained unchanged, with a total cure rate of 100%.

(From “Journal of Zhejiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine,” March 2009)

Traditional folk remedies include the following formulas: Peach Blossom Powder, composed of 30g of Fritillaria cirrhosa, 9g of Myrrh, 9g of Camphor, 9g of Lotus Leaf, 15g of Cinnabar, 12g of Pinellia Ternata, 30g of Raw Gypsum, and 10% Peach Blossom Powder formulated with glucose powder. Children under 1 year old received 0.1g per dose, 1-year-olds received 0.2g, 2-year-olds received 0.3g, with each subsequent year adding 0.1g, taken three times daily.

Adults could increase the dosage accordingly.
