4 Prognosis and Outcome
Acute aplastic anemia is a group of bone marrow failure diseases with sudden onset and rapid progression, often accompanied by visceral bleeding and severe infection, frequently endangering life, with a poor prognosis. In treatment, traditional Chinese medicine with heat-clearing, blood-cooling, and detoxifying effects can be used, along with Western medical support therapies such as component blood transfusion, broad-spectrum antibiotics, gamma globulin, and hematopoietic stimulating factors, or immunosuppressive therapy can be combined, which can save a considerable number of patients' lives [24]. Chronic aplastic anemia has a relatively milder onset, with less severe complications of infection and bleeding, but treatment takes longer to show effectiveness. Using tonifying kidney and activating blood traditional Chinese medicines and/or androgen therapy, most patients’ conditions can be alleviated, with an efficacy rate of about 80%, resulting in a good prognosis. However, if treatment is delayed or inappropriate, the condition may drag on without healing, even progressing to severe aplastic anemia, seriously affecting the patient’s survival.
