Voice
In the early stages of blood-related illness, loss of voice is often due to wind-fire. The voice is governed by the lungs, and when the lung metal is clear and bright, the voice is clear and resonant. However, in blood-related cases, the lung metal is deficient and attacked by fire, causing blockage of the lung orifices and nasal congestion, which in turn stifles the voice. If the blockage is caused by external factors, Xiaochaihu Decoction combined with Apricot Kernel, Jiegeng, Jingjie, and Peppermint is recommended for treatment. If the lungs are filled with real heat, blocking the orifices and stifling the voice, Ren Shen Xie Fei Tang is recommended for treatment. In addition, when body fluids are dry and the lungs are withered and scorched, the voice becomes hoarse and weak; this is a sign of weakness due to blood loss, and Ren Shen Qing Fei Tang and Qing Zao Jiu Fei Tang are recommended for treatment, often using white honey, Chuanbeimu, Ren Shen, Walnut, and Lily steamed together. Furthermore, when tuberculosis worms reside in the lungs, gnawing away at the lung tissue and corroding the metal, the throat itches and coughs, and the heat is hard to control—this is a case of incurable tuberculosis, and Bai Bu, Ren Shen, Ming Xiong, Otter Claw, Bai Ji, Lily, Silkworm Sand, Musk, Jiegeng, Licorice, Otter Liver, and Eel Bone are recommended for treatment. Moreover, any case of tuberculosis with throat damage is considered incurable. Overall, it is best to use the above-mentioned methods, with external remedies such as pearls, Ren Shen, Ox Bile, and Ming Xiong being applied.
The voice is produced by qi. Qi originates from the kidneys, so the production of voice is actually determined by the kidneys. If qi does not return to its source, the cough becomes worse, the qi becomes more depleted, and the voice becomes drier. In such cases, Du Qi Wan is recommended as the main remedy, combined with Ren Shen, Agarwood, and Terminalia, and Shenqi Wan is also effective.
[Commentary] The lungs govern the voice, and in blood-related cases, the lungs are often deficient and easily attacked by wind-fire, leading to nasal congestion and stifled voice. In such cases, Xiaochaihu Decoction is recommended for adjustment. For real heat in the lungs, Ren Shen Xie Fei Tang is used. For withered and scorched lungs, Qing Zao Jiu Fei Tang is used. When tuberculosis worms reside in the lungs, causing persistent cough and heat, forming incurable tuberculosis, Bai Bu, Ren Shen, Ming Xiong, Otter Claw, Bai Ji, Lily, and other remedies are recommended.
