When wind-cold invades the lungs, it generates phlegm and fire, so platycodon, mulberry bark, pinellia, and ginger are used to facilitate the elimination of phlegm and fluids, while rehmannia, aster, bamboo shoots, ophiopogon, and schisandra are used to clear and restrain the fire. However, if old cold is not eliminated, phlegm and fire will keep recurring, so ma huang is used to search out and eliminate the old cold. Only licorice is used to harmonize the other herbs. Any situation where cold contains fire, or fire harbors cold, can be treated.

[Note] This formula from "Qianjin Fang" treats conditions where phlegm and fluid mix with cold and heat.
