Ginseng 5 qian, Sappan Wood 4 qian
It treats postpartum hemorrhage, injuries from falls and blows, dried-up blood in the lungs, smoke-like coal dust coming from the nose, and a purplish complexion. The reasoning is that when lung metal qi is strong, it can control the downward flow of qi, preventing blood from not only invading the lungs but also the lung's qi division. Nowadays, however, blood not only invades the qi division but also rises upward, directly attacking the lungs. Blood is governed by liver wood, while metal qi is nearly exhausted, allowing wood to dare to offend it; lung qi is already depleted (1), giving blood the opportunity to take advantage. This formula uses Sappan Wood to harness liver wood qi, with its red color and salty taste to break blood, effectively treating the liver as a way to eliminate the enemy of the lungs; meanwhile, it urgently uses Ginseng to generate fluids and regulate the lungs to replenish qi, so that once lung qi is strong, it can naturally control the flow of qi, preventing blood from invading again.
[Note] (1) Depleted: destroyed, ruined.
[Note] This formula uses Ginseng to nourish the lungs and Sappan Wood to remove blood stasis. The former has the effect of nourishing the lungs and calming the liver, while the latter helps activate blood circulation and treat the liver. Together, they form an important prescription for treating blood-related ailments.
