This medication is the second-generation version of Meperidine. According to the WHO’s three-tier pain management system, the first tier consists of nonsteroidal analgesics: indomethacin, naproxen, ibuprofen, fenbid, rofecoxib, celecoxib. The second tier includes weak opioids: acetaminophen-codeine, codeine, strong pain relief. The third tier comprises strong opioids: tramadol, Meperidine, OxyContin. Tramadol has a ceiling effect, whereas OxyContin does not; typically, administering it once every 24 hours can achieve satisfactory therapeutic results.
