Acute Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (CAP) March 28, 2005

This is the most common clinical condition, with a high mortality rate among elderly patients. Administering antibiotics within four hours now challenges the traditional approach of selecting antibiotics based on antibiotic susceptibility testing. The most common cause of CAP is Streptococcus pneumoniae, but allergic reactions to penicillin are becoming increasingly prevalent. Anyone allergic to penicillin tends to exhibit some degree of allergy to cephalosporins and macrolides as well. Recently, the world has advocated the use of quinolones, such as levofloxacin, which show obvious advantages in treating pulmonary and bronchial infections.
