Case Study: Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis—March 21, 1979

In June 1978, the husband of Nurse Ren Ying at Tianshui County Hospital underwent a chest X-ray that revealed a 2 cm × 2 cm shadow in the right lung, accompanied by cough, low-grade fever, loss of appetite, and fatigue. His alanine aminotransferase level exceeded 300 U/L, leading to a diagnosis of lung cancer at Tianshui Hospital. After arriving in Lanzhou, subsequent imaging showed no signs of lung cancer, only mild infection in the right lung, hepatomegaly extending two finger-widths below the ribs with tenderness upon palpation. Based on the diagnosis of chronic hepatitis, the following prescription was administered:

Gentian root 12 g, Gardenia fruit 9 g, Artemisia capillaris 6 g, Angelica sinensis 12 g, Gentiana macrophylla 9 g, White peony root 15 g, Rehmannia glutinosa 12 g, Polygonatum odoratum 6 g, Curcuma wenyujin 6 g, Shenqu 9 g, Codonopsis pilosula 12 g, Alisma orientalis 9 g, Glycyrrhiza 6 g, Hawthorn fruit 9 g, Salvia miltiorrhiza 12 g, Isatis indigotica 30 g, Notopterygium incisum 9 g, Pueraria lobata 12 g, Saposhnikovia divaricata 12 g, Taraxacum officinale 12 g, Patrinia scabiosaefolia 12 g.

After taking 30 doses of the above formula, the patient's spirits improved, appetite increased, and liver function returned to normal. Subsequently, 10 doses of Guipi Tang were administered to consolidate the therapeutic effect.
