Case of Leukemia with Upper Respiratory Tract Infection and Fever—March 25, 1979

Mr. Lu suffered from acute myelogenous leukemia. Despite combined chemotherapy and traditional Chinese medicine treatment, his condition gradually improved, but each cold would exacerbate his illness. Present symptoms included fatigue, pallor, sore throat, and fever.

Prescription: Mulberry leaves 10 g, Chrysanthemum flowers 15 g, Forsythia suspensa 15 g, Honeysuckle flowers 15 g, Platycodon grandiflorus 6 g, Phragmites communis 10 g, Gypsum fibrosum 30 g, Anemarrhena asphodeloides 6 g, Japonica rice 30 g, Agastache rugosa 10 g, Eupatorium fortunei 10 g, Bamboo leaves 10 g.

After taking the medication, the fever subsided, the patient's spirits improved, and the cold healed.

Note: In cases of leukemia complicated by colds, due to qi deficiency, pathogenic factors enter the body from the exterior to the interior at the onset; moreover, because of blood and yin deficiency, whether it is wind-cold or wind-heat, the condition often presents as heat. Therefore, treating colds in such patients involves combining Sangju Yin and Baihu Tang. Agastache rugosa and Eupatorium fortunei are aromatic herbs that dispel foul odors; when heat enters the blood chamber and penetrates deep into the lower jiao, it easily carries dampness and turbidity, so adding these herbs enhances the efficacy.
