Treatment of Arrhythmia, August 28, 1996
When treating this condition, I often use Zhigancao Tang (ginseng, cinnamon, aconite, ginger, jujube, and licorice), Zhuanlü Tang (three jujubes, amber, and caraway seeds), Guocao Tang (yellow, angelica, codonopsis, ophiopogon, schisandra, salvia, citrus peel, platycodon, and golden bell fruit), and Banliao Xiangcao Zhengxin Tang (banxia, gualou, citrus peel, cinnamon twig, red peony root, tea tree root). Clinically, I place great emphasis on raw rehmannia, ophiopogon, salvia, tea tree root, sophora, changshan, and corydalis. Recently, in the "Chinese Medicine Journal," dozens of authors unanimously agreed that sophora has a clear rhythm-regulating effect. Feng Yipeng from Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine proposed a "Sophora Soup" (40 g sophora, 50 g raw rehmannia). Wang Shujun from China Medical University argued that using sophora, cinnamon, and epimedium in combination with syndrome differentiation not only effectively treats arrhythmia but also heart muscle inflammation and pericarditis—more severe cardiac conditions. Xia Jiande from Wuxi Coal Mine Hospital formulated a "Five-Sophora Soup" (northern sophora, southern sophora, codonopsis, salvia, sophora, cinnamon, dragon bone, oyster shell, cypress seed, and sour jujube seed). Zhao Maoqing from Malu Hospital in Shanghai created a "Sophora Pulse-Replenishing Soup" (sophora, salvia, xuan sam, cinnamon, ophiopogon). Chen Naiqing from Lianyungang Red Cross Hospital prepared a "Salvia Soup" (sophora and salvia).
Based on the above, I have formulated a prescription called "Heart Rhythm Regulator": 30 g sophora, 20 g raw rehmannia, 10 g codonopsis, 30 g salvia, 10 g cinnamon, 10 g ophiopogon, 20 g dragon bone and oyster shell, 3 g schisandra, 10 g amomum.
This formula consists of three sophoras, two rehmannias, two jujubes, plus life-giving elements like raw pulse, dragon bone, and oyster shell. Mnemonic: Three sophoras, two rehmannias, two jujubes, plus cinnamon, amomum, and tea tree root.
Besides treating arrhythmia, sophora can also treat dermatitis, eczema, erysipelas, cutaneous amyloidosis, and vitiligo. It also shows obvious efficacy in cough, asthma, insomnia, hepatitis B, edema, perianal diseases, and gonorrhea. Some say "sophora is remarkably effective in treating asthma and insomnia."
