Brief Discussion on Antiemetics, October 6, 1996
In the 1960s, Emor was the first choice for antiemetics, with chlorpromazine used for severe cases. In the 1970s, Metoclopramide 10 mg was introduced, taken orally three times daily; this drug could also be administered intravenously, with the same dosage as oral administration. In the 1980s, Domperidone 10–20 mg was used, taken orally three times daily, with an effect 10–20 times stronger than Metoclopramide. In the 1990s, a new antiemetic, Ondansetron hydrochloride, appeared, taken orally 4–8 mg three times daily; this drug was imported and expensive. In summary, the function of all antiemetics is to enhance gastric emptying and regulate the relaxation and contraction of the upper (cardia) and lower (pylorus) parts of the stomach.
