Treatment of Disc Herniation—April 15, 1997
This is caused by the protrusion of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc, often due to incorrect posture, repetitive movements, or sudden impact of gravity. Severe lower back pain, accompanied by unilateral sciatica, and a positive straight leg raise test. The best treatment is manual reduction, where the patient sits on the back of a chair, the assistant gently dislocates both sides of the spine with their hands, and the practitioner presses the protruding part of the spine with their hands, aiming to allow the displaced nucleus pulposus to automatically return to its original position through loosening of the intervertebral space. Afterwards, apply medicinal liquid to the affected area, pressing with the thumb for 10 minutes, 1–2 times daily, and 90% of patients recover after one week. The medicinal liquid is prepared by grinding Angelica sinensis, Chuanxiong, Paeonia lactiflora, Rehmannia glutinosa, Peach Kernel, Safflower, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Roasted Frankincense, Myrrh, Mulberry branches, Willow branches, and Locust tree branches into powder, then decocting 15g of this mixture in 60mL of sesame oil for 40 minutes, and taking the supernatant as the "medicinal liquid."
