New Insights into Diabetes Treatment—June 20, 1997

Diabetic patients generally have higher blood viscosity than normal, and many also have higher blood triglycerides, so blood rheology is characterized by being thick, sticky, viscous, and slow. Therefore, using blood-activating and stasis-resolving drugs is the correct approach. Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang, Huangqi Gui Zhi Wu Wu Tang, and Xuefu Zhu Yu Tang are commonly used formulas; Rehmannia glutinosa, Paeonia lactiflora, and Salvia miltiorrhiza are commonly used medicines; Atractylodes macrocephala, Alisma orientale, Poria cocos, and Raw Coix seed are commonly used medicines for treating dampness. Combining these with my usual formulas such as Gui Fu Ba Wei, Ren Shen Bai Hu, and Sheng Mai San can form a systematic medication regimen for treating diabetes. Some people use Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan to treat diabetes; some use Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang to treat diabetes; Mr. Shi Jinmo uses Rehmannia glutinosa, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Pueraria lobata, Dioscorea opposita, Atractylodes macrocephala, Scrophularia ningpoensis, and Astragalus membranaceus, among which Salvia miltiorrhiza, Rehmannia glutinosa, and Pueraria lobata have blood-activating effects.
