Discussion on Bone Metastasis, July 18, 1997
Bone metastasis is a common condition among cancer patients, with breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, reproductive system cancers, gastric cancer, and liver cancer being the most frequent sites of occurrence. Approximately two-thirds of breast cancer patients develop bone metastases, half of prostate cancer patients, and one-third of lung cancer patients. These three types of cancer account for 85% of all bone metastases, indicating that the majority of bone metastases originate from tumors in these three areas. Bone metastasis can cause localized pain in patients; if the metastatic site is in the spine, it may damage the spinal cord and lead to paraplegia. However, the threat to life is relatively slow, and some patients can survive for several years. With appropriate chemotherapy, survival can be extended by 5 to 10 years.
