Buzhong Yiqi Tang and Buyin Yiqi Tang 1997.12.10

Buzhong Yiqi Tang is a renowned formula by Dongyuan, which greatly tonifies middle qi, enhances human immunity, and regulates the autonomic nervous system, thereby relieving fatigue, raising blood pressure, stopping spontaneous sweating, and increasing appetite. From a microscopic perspective of syndrome differentiation: ① strengthening non-specific immunity; ② promoting hematopoiesis; ③ regulating the functions of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves; ④ enhancing skeletal muscle vitality. Therefore, this formula can be used for blood disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, connective tissue diseases, as well as habitual colds and various conditions of frailty after major illnesses. Mr. Zhang Jingyue replaced Baizhu in this formula with Shanyao and Huangqi with Shengdi Huang, renaming it Buyin Yiqi Tang—a clever move. In terms of autonomic nervous system regulation, Dongyuan’s formula is suitable for when the parasympathetic nervous system dominates, while Jingyue’s formula is better for when the sympathetic nervous system dominates; in terms of immune enhancement, the former strengthens non-specific immunity, while the latter strengthens specific immunity. Especially in the later stages of febrile diseases, the former addresses qi deficiency and yang deficiency, whereas the latter addresses yin deficiency and blood deficiency—these two approaches complement each other and enhance each other’s effects.
