Analysis of Nasopharyngeal Cancer Data, July 2, 1998
The link between nasopharyngeal cancer and EB virus is well established. In high-incidence areas, the positive rate of EB virus complement-fixing antibodies is significantly higher than in low-incidence areas, with the Pearl River Delta region in China being a major hotspot. EB virus is a type of herpesvirus. While infection is quite common, the incidence of nasopharyngeal cancer is very low, so the relationship between EB virus infection and nasopharyngeal cancer still requires further research to draw definitive conclusions. Early symptoms of nasopharyngeal cancer sometimes manifest as unilateral proptosis, which must be carefully distinguished from intracranial diseases. Nasopharyngeal cancer is the most common tumor in the head and neck region, with onset between ages 30 and 60, predominantly affecting males, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.5:1. Undifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma accounts for 85.6% of cases, with cervical lymph node metastasis occurring early on and bone, liver, and lung metastases developing in later stages. The five-year survival rate after radiotherapy is around 50%.
