Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome 1999.2.12
Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) occurs when a weakened body is subjected to external injury or infection, triggering the production of endogenous immune-inflammatory factors and immediately initiating a “cascade effect,” which leads to multi-organ dysfunction and metabolic disturbances throughout the body. This condition is also known as multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Such conditions typically occur in critically ill patients, often following severe bacterial infections or trauma. When this cascade effect arises in the context of critical illness, it subsequently results in systemic failure (shock, respiratory failure).
