Major Insights into the Treatment of Hematological Diseases 1999.4.30
In the third month of the Ji Mao year, a patient with aplastic anemia named Qiao Dong suddenly developed jaundice-type hepatitis, with positive HBSAg. He was promptly treated with Xiao Chai Hu combined with San Huang, Yin Chen Hao, Dan, Qi, Dang, Shao, Qin, Bai, Wu Xiao, and other herbs. The jaundice quickly subsided, liver function returned to normal, and the condition improved. At the same time, all three cell lines rose to normal levels. It is worth noting that for over ten years, this patient's three cell lines had never reached such ideal levels. Since the age of six, he had been suffering from aplastic anemia and had undergone various treatments, including kidney-tonifying formulas, kidney-and-spleen-tonifying formulas, and spleen-tonifying formulas. Overall, it was felt that tonifying the spleen was less effective than tonifying the kidneys. Although these treatments had been effective for over ten years, none had achieved such remarkable results (HGB 138 g/L, RBC 4.6 × 10¹²/L, WBC 4.5 × 10⁹/L, PLT 60 × 10⁹/L). This year, I treated a case of liver disease complicated by gastric ulcer bleeding, and using the method of soothing the liver, hemoglobin rose very rapidly, reaching as high as 168 g/L. Recalling that 20 years ago, when treating the leukemia of Chief Engineer Qian, the use of the Jin Che Dan Qi Tang formula, which both soothes and tonifies the liver, proved effective, it can be preliminarily concluded that the method of soothing and tonifying the liver is indeed an excellent approach for treating aplastic anemia. For over thirty years, there has been ongoing debate about whether to focus on tonifying the spleen or the kidneys in treating aplastic anemia, but my proposal of the method of soothing the liver truly represents a breakthrough. In the future, clinical practice should conduct more verification of this approach.
