Meaning of Cloning and Its Clinical Applications—January 6, 2000

The basic meaning of cloning is asexual reproduction. Modern cloning technology is based on in vitro nuclear transfer. In vitro nuclear transfer technology developed on the basis of genetic engineering, which first succeeded in 1979. This technique involves isolating and culturing the DNA of donor cells to fully express the characteristics of the maternal genes, then implanting them into recipient cells. The genes of the two are integrated, achieving the goal of recombinant genes. Cloning technology further takes this asexual process to transplant the complete genes of T cells into recipient T cells whose nuclei have been removed, thereby creating a new breed through asexual reproduction.
