Successful Discontinuation of Antihypertensive Medications and Predictive Factors 2000.7.28

A new research report shows that some hypertensive patients can discontinue antihypertensive medications through proper treatment. In a clinical trial involving non-pharmacological interventions for elderly patients, 975 patients were randomly divided into treatment groups: obese and non-obese. All participants underwent weight loss, weight loss combined with sodium restriction, and followed a standardized medication-reduction protocol. During the medication-reduction period, blood pressure was measured weekly; after discontinuation, blood pressure was measured every two weeks for a total of three times. If blood pressure rose to 150/90 mmHg or higher, or if complications occurred, patients were required to resume taking antihypertensive medications. The results showed that 20.6% of patients did not complete the medication-reduction program, with a total success rate of 30.4% after 30 months of discontinuation. Those who underwent weight loss, reduced sodium intake, or weight loss combined with sodium restriction had a 25%, 32%, and 45% lower chance of reaching the experimental endpoint compared to ordinary patients, demonstrating that sodium restriction and weight loss are important measures for treating hypertension.
