One Case of Liver Cirrhosis with Jaundice Improvement 2000.11.26
In the winter of the Gengchen year, I treated Bai Li’s liver cirrhosis with jaundice. The woman was in decompensated cirrhosis, having previously experienced ascites and hematemesis. Last year, she traveled to Xi’an for surgery, enduring exhausting travel back and forth, which worsened her jaundice, causing pain in both flanks that radiated to the back. I advised her to rest and follow a light diet, then prescribed Yi Gan Kang combined with Gu Sheng I.
Prescription: Chai Hu 10g, Zhi Shi 10g, Bai Shao 15g, Gan Cao 6g, Chuan Xiong 6g, Xiang Fu 6g, Dan Shen 10g, Mu Xiang 10g, Cao Dou Kou 6g, Da Huang 6g, Huang Lian 6g, Huang Qin 10g, Yan Hu Suo 10g, Chuan Lian Zi 20g, processed frankincense and myrrh 3g, Ban Xia 6g, Chen Pi 6g, Gan Jiang 6g, Sheng Long Gu and Mu Li 15g, Hai Piao Xiao 15g. Decoct in water and take orally.
After taking 20 doses of the prescription, the jaundice significantly subsided, total bilirubin returned to normal, and transaminase levels also normalized. The patient’s mental state improved, appetite increased, complexion gradually became rosy, and stomach discomfort eased compared to before. Upon reflection, this formula embodies the principle of soothing the liver and harmonizing the stomach. Ancient practitioners used Xiaoyao San to treat liver-stomach disharmony, which is indeed a major therapeutic approach for liver diseases. This formula uses Chai Hu to disperse liver stagnation, small Dan Shen, San Huang to clear heart fire, and Xiang Sha Liu Jun to harmonize the stomach, thereby strengthening the effects of soothing the liver and harmonizing the stomach. Adding Sheng Long Gu, Mu Li, and Hai Piao Xiao helps suppress stress-induced gastric acid. Yan Hu Suo, Chuan Lian Zi, processed frankincense and myrrh, green peel, ginger, cinnamon, San Leng, and E Zhu all promote the flow of qi and blood, which is highly compatible with the treatment of liver fibrosis. Adding Yin Chen and Zhi Zi further enhances the effect of reducing jaundice. In summary, this formula is indeed effective and can serve as a basis for developing a liver cirrhosis granule formulation in the future.
