Myxedema and Heart Disease February 28, 2001
Myxedema can cause bradycardia, low heart sounds, low voltage, and ST-T changes, and may also be accompanied by pericardial effusion. Patients often experience palpitations, shortness of breath, general weakness, edema, and a thyroid iodine uptake rate of only 20% or less over 24 hours. Due to the rarity of cases, it is often misdiagnosed. Treatment with thyroid preparations is effective for this condition. In summary, both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can lead to heart disease.
