Q: My sister is 42 years old and has been experiencing frequent stabbing pain above her right ear (a little behind the temple) since the second half of last year. The pain sometimes lasts only a few seconds, sometimes 1–2 minutes, and she previously had symptoms of head fullness and heaviness. A CT scan at the hospital showed no abnormalities. What should be done?

A: This is migraine, or neurogenic headache. TCM classifies headaches into several categories: frontal pain belongs to Yangming, occipital pain to Taiyang, vertex pain to Jueyin, and bilateral pain to Shaoyang. TCM is very effective in treating headaches, and its flexible approach through syndrome differentiation offers significant advantages over Western painkillers.
