13. Lao Ren: Excessive Sweating After Infant Fever
Q: My baby is seven months old and was hospitalized on January 6, 2014, due to fever. After receiving thiamphenicol, the fever kept recurring, so they switched to roxithromycin, which finally brought the fever down but caused a rash. After the rash disappeared, the baby was discharged. Two days later, the baby developed diarrhea and vomiting. After treatment for diarrhea, the baby now sweats a lot at night. How should this be treated?
A: Your child’s fever is likely an upper respiratory infection, which can lead to both respiratory and gastrointestinal autonomic dysfunction. Roxithromycin and other cephalosporins are brand names for cephalosporin antibiotics, mainly used for anti-inflammatory purposes. After the inflammation subsides, the major illness is gone, but some autonomic imbalance remains, such as excessive sweating. For such conditions, TCM offers more treatment options than Western medicine. You can consult a TCM doctor for syndrome differentiation and treatment.
