Preface to Practical Internal Medicine of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine – 2nd Edition The book “Practical Internal Medicine of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine – 2nd Edition” is about to be published. The editor-in-chief, Professor Pei Zhengxue, has invited me to review the manuscript and write a preface for it. Sixteen years ago, when the first edition was published, I wrote a preface for it. Time has flown by—16 years have passed—and given the book’s novel approach, rich content, and practical relevance, it has already sparked tremendous responses among readers both domestically and internationally. In the 1990s, the book won the “International Gold Award for Outstanding Contributions” at the World Congress of Traditional Medicine, followed by awards such as the “National First Prize for Excellent Chinese Medicine Books” and the “Gansu Provincial Science and Technology Progress Second Prize” from the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine—a truly rare and outstanding large-scale book in China’s traditional Chinese medicine literature.

The book was written based on Professor Pei Zhengxue’s sixteen-character principle: “Western medical diagnosis, Chinese medical differentiation, Chinese medicine as the primary treatment, Western medicine as a supplementary approach.” This approach allowed the book to emphasize “Western medical diagnosis,” while also employing Chinese medical differentiation for each disease, and strictly adhering to “Chinese medicine as the primary treatment” in clinical practice. As a result, this book became a specialized work that combined Chinese medical differentiation with modern Western medical diagnosis, offering clear references for readers in terms of the intersection between Chinese and Western medicine, the standardization of Chinese medical syndromes, and the enhancement of clinical efficacy. Since its publication 16 years ago, the book has been reprinted multiple times, yet still fails to fully meet reader demand. In response to the widespread needs of readers, Gansu Science and Technology Press tasked Professor Pei Zhengxue with revising the first edition. Looking at the entire manuscript for the second edition, not only were new achievements and highlights in internal medicine over the past 20 years—both in Chinese and Western medicine—added, but the Chinese medical differentiation section of the first edition was further refined and improved. With over 2 million characters in total, this book can be regarded as a cutting-edge integrated Chinese and Western medicine masterpiece. If readers read it carefully, they will gain a deeper understanding of the unique characteristics of both Chinese and Western medicine, and further strengthen the complementary roles of these two systems, deepening their mutual understanding, integrating them seamlessly, and applying them clinically.

The purpose of writing this book, in small terms, is to provide medical professionals with new perspectives and enhanced therapeutic outcomes; in larger terms, it aims to open up new avenues for the development of modern Chinese medicine, combining traditional Chinese medicine with modern science and technology, and riding the fast track of contemporary scientific advancement. It is important to note that modern science and technology are vast, interconnected networks composed of various disciplines; within this network, progress in any single discipline—any single link—will drive the collective progress of other links. However, traditional Chinese medicine and modern science and technology have long been disconnected, and to some extent, have been excluded from the modern science and technology network. The emergence of “Practical Internal Medicine of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine – 2nd Edition” will undoubtedly benefit traditional Chinese medicine’s integration into the modern science and technology network. Professor Pei Zhengxue and his team of authors have made tremendous contributions to this endeavor.

Professor Pei Zhengxue is over seventy years old, has practiced medicine for more than fifty years, and possesses extensive clinical experience in traditional Chinese medicine, along with a strong foundation in Western medicine. His 16 medical monographs are an important treasure trove of academic thought in the field of integrated Chinese and Western medicine in China. This time, he once again led his integrated Chinese and Western medicine academic team to complete this monumental work of integrated Chinese and Western medicine. I am deeply impressed by this achievement and am honored to write the preface.

Preface to Practical Internal Medicine of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine – 2nd Edition Practical Internal Medicine of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine – 1st Edition The first edition has been published for exactly 16 years. Over those 16 years, medical developments both domestically and internationally have continued to evolve, and both Western and Chinese medicine have seen unprecedented advancements in disease diagnosis and treatment. In recent years, many readers have sent letters and made phone calls, expressing their need for this book and suggesting that it should be revised and republished promptly to better meet the needs of a wider audience. We reached out to our colleagues at Gansu Science and Technology Press, who had also received numerous suggestions in this regard. Since its publication, the book has garnered a positive response from readers; despite multiple reprints after the first printing, it still failed to fully satisfy the needs of the general public. Our colleagues at Gansu Science and Technology Press also suggested that we quickly prepare a revised edition of the book—the second edition.

The first edition of “Practical Internal Medicine of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine” was edited by Professor Pei Zhengxue, and was jointly authored by 26 of the most renowned integrated Chinese and Western medicine experts from the five northwestern provinces. Given that Professor Mao Xinmin had passed away many years ago, and that Professors Huang Hui Zhao from Ningxia, Xu Zicheng from Gansu, Liu Maofu from Shaanxi, Zhao Kun from Xinjiang, and Zhang Yi from Qinghai were all well beyond their eighties, their physical strength no longer allowed them to continue participating in the book’s compilation. Among the newly emerging talents in the field of integrated Chinese and Western medicine across the five northwestern provinces, we had not yet been able to accurately identify suitable candidates, so we had to rely on local connections and select individuals from nearby areas.

The compilation of “Practical Internal Medicine of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine – 2nd Edition” strictly followed the structure of the first edition, fully respecting the achievements of the first edition. In fact, this edition was merely a partial addition to the first edition. The additional content primarily included new advances, discoveries, and highlights in disease diagnosis and treatment over the past 16 years—both in Chinese and Western medicine.

In essence, whenever there was new information or breakthroughs in disease diagnosis and treatment, we incorporated it, and we did not include anything without new insights. While maintaining the original framework and content unchanged, we added new sections, such as organ transplantation, interventional procedures for the heart, liver, spleen, and other organs, multifunctional stem cell transplantation, targeted cancer therapies, and new discoveries in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases like SARS and influenza A(H1N1). The book also included excerpts and discussions on new theories, formulas, and proven remedies that emerged in Chinese medicine over the past 16 years.

In addition to Pei Zhengxue, Liu Gu’an, Li Yongshou, Dai Enlai, and Wan Yi Xin, who were members of the first edition’s editorial committee, new contributors to the second edition included Zhang Youcheng, Li Yingdong, Chen Xuezhong, Pu Chao Hui, Li Yan Yi, Liu Jing, Zhang Liansheng, Wu Bin, Wang Hai Dong, Xue Wenhan, and Guo Qian—all of whom have become prominent figures in the medical field of Gansu Province over the past decade. Although Ms. Zhang Guiqiong was not included on the editorial committee, she played an important role as the secretary of the editorial board in the book’s preparation.
